If you're a Tim Burton fan, you will recognize that line from the well-known song "This is Halloween" in the movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas." With Halloween just around the corner, this is the perfect time to celebrate all things Tim Burton! We have a talented group of ladies on this weekend blog hop. Join us as we each share a project inspired by one of Tim's quirky characters!
I am a huge Tim Burton fan! I had to be part of this blog hop. It was hard for me to come up with an idea. I kept seeing Jack Skeleton in my mind (love that story). But I steer clear of copy writed material. So of course I googled Tim Burton. When I saw Sweeney Todd, I knew. I am also a huge Johnny Depp fan. What a team!! I love this story! I have not seen the stage performance. Not sure I want to. It might ruin it for me. Who knew the gorgeous and terrific actor Johnny Depp could sing as well!! Dude! I am not going to tell you the story of The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. I hope that my scrapbook layout will intrigue enough to see the movie (if you have not) or properly remind you of the masterpiece it is! I had so much fun making this layout!! I hope you enjoy it.
I used photo mats as backing to each of the elements of the story. So, there are no actual photos. Just a fun story. The layout could be adapted to include photos of your outing to the theatrical production. You could also add the ticket stub and maybe the program. I purposefully crinkled the photo backs and chalked them with a deep powder blue. It makes it a bit more eerie!
It is questionable whether this story takes place in Victorian times. The dress somewhat indicates so. I felt lace would compliment the story. I added lace to the layout along the right side. As well, I thought lace circles would tie in with the cogs (explained later). This was my first try at yo yo flowers, but I knew I wanted them. It is quite easy! I used the needle and thread method.
If you know the story, Sweeney creates a mechanical chair that tilts back, dumping his victims down a shoot to the basement. This is why I used cogs throughout the layout. I thought it was an archaic, evil touch! Or even a bit steampunk? The cog cut file came from Dan99 at My Crafty Files. I thought it would look cool to add real metal cogs, but alas, I am a papercrafter.
There are two pockets on the left page. They have one stanza of a poem similar to the Sweeney Todd story. Some folks claim that the original story is based on the poem "The Man from Iron Bark" by A.B. (Banjo) Paterson. You can read the Full Poem here. I like to perform and would love to read it to you!! Such Passion! But, I will leave it to your own imagination.
A grunt was all reply he got; he shaved the bushman's chin,
Then made the water boiling hot and dipped the razor in.
He raised his hand, his brow grew black, he paused awhile to gloat,
Then slashed the red-hot razor-back across his victim's throat;
Upon the newly-shaven skin it made a livid mark -
No doubt it fairly took him in - the man from Ironbark.
Inside each pocket is a removable tag with quotes from Sweeney Todd himself!!

Sweeney was drawn by my 13 year old. She has more talent in her little finger then I have in my whole body! She loves to drawn and Sweeney was a breeze for her. I hand colored him with colored pencils. Note how he has his arm extended with the straight blade to compliment the quote on the photo mat. I am encouraging my daughter to turn her drawings in to digi stamps. I did not include Mrs Lovetts. I had to push my daughter for Sweeney. (teens and motivation . . . )
All the other paper piecings I designed with my Pazzles. It was so fun! The hat was hard, but I felt it was important to the story to reflect the time and romance of the tale. And I finally have a chair file that I can use!! The other cute files that I created are the straight blade razor, the meat pie, and the door.

The background paper is Core'dinations Core Amour Onyx Collection. The paper is white washed gray, embossed with swirls that look like stitches and has some swirls inked on it as well. It is delicious!

You guys did a FANTASTIC job portraying the story/movie. Love it and it's so very original. Very awesome. You can tell how much work and thought went into this amazing layout. Wowie Krista! This is an impressive project! I have not seen Sweeney Todd yet, but my son loves it - he is 19 and into those kind of gorey things. I am not so much, but I have been wanting to see it as it is kind of a classic and after it all it Johnny in it so I am willing to see anything he is in 🙂 Anyway... I love this layout. As you explained everything, I am sure this probably reflects the movie quite well 🙂 Love the cuts you created and your daughter's drawing is great. My daughter and my son both love to draw and they love Tim Burton. Thanks for sharing and for explaining how you did this amazing layout! I love it and would love to try some of these techniques.
